How Far Back?

We have been asked how far back the DNA testing goes in an animals lineage. We checked with the lab and here is what they said:
"The conclusion that we would draw would depend upon a number of different things. The extreme cases are very straightforward, it gets complicated after that:
1) If the dog is a level 1 plus a level 4 or 5 – Probably pure bred with a small amount of DNA being carried forward that does not distract from the pure bred status.
2) Lots of level 3 or 4 dogs – either the dog is not pure bred or there was contamination of the sample with other dogs. We have seen this many times in multiple dog households. The case that comes to mind is one owner who had a pure bred boxer, and a pure bred Australian Shepherd. When we ran the dna we got a boxer/australian shepherd mix.
3) The complication come when you get a high level 2 with a number of level 4 or 5 breeds present. At that point it is unclear.
Our test have been designed to detect traces of breeds going back many generations, and that means that sometimes we can detect the presence of a breed from long ago. This is why our test is only recommended for mixed breed dogs."
